Tip: Use our Total Load Calculator to find this value.

Optional: Battery Charging Requirements

How many sun hours per day to achieve the charge. Must be > 0 if battery capacity is > 0, and ≤ Peak Sun Hours.

Battery Bank Size Calculator

Tip: Use our Total Load Calculator to find this value. Recommended: Lithium ~80-90%, Lead Acid ~50%.

Inverter Sizing Calculator

The sum of power ratings of appliances likely to run simultaneously for extended periods. The highest power draw you expect, including startup surges of motors (e.g., fridge, pump). Select a factor if your peak load includes significant motor startup. The inverter's surge rating should meet (Peak Load * Surge Factor).

Panel Tilt & Orientation Optimizer

Enter positive for Northern Hemisphere, negative for Southern. (e.g., London ~51.5, Sydney ~ -33.9)

Annual Energy Production Estimator

Tip: Use our Sunlight Hours & Location Analyzer for a location-specific estimate. Accounts for losses from wiring, inverter, dirt, temperature, etc. Typical: 75-85%.

Solar System Payback & ROI Estimator

Enter the 3-letter code for your currency (e.g., USD for US Dollar). Calculations will use this code. Tip: Use our Annual Energy Production Estimator if unsure. Typical: 0.5% - 1% per year. Historical average: ~2-3%.

Sun: The ultimate source of energy for your system.

Solar Panel: Converts sunlight into DC (Direct Current) electricity.

Charge Controller: Regulates the voltage and current from the solar panels to safely charge the batteries and prevent overcharging.

Battery: Stores the DC energy for use when the sun isn't shining, such as at night or on cloudy days.

Inverter: Converts the DC electricity from the panels or battery into AC (Alternating Current) electricity, which is the type used by most household appliances.

Load: Represents the appliances and devices in your home, RV, or cabin that consume the generated AC electricity.

Understanding Your Electricity Bill

Your electricity bill contains key information for sizing a solar system. The most important value is your average energy consumption, typically measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh). Knowing this helps you determine how much solar energy you need to generate to offset your usage.

Utility Power Co. - Monthly Statement
Total Consumption: 750 kWh This is your target for solar generation.
Billing Period: 30 Days
Daily Average: 25 kWh/day (750 kWh / 30 days). Convert to 25,000 Wh/day for our calculators.
Average Rate: $0.15 / kWh Use this value in the ROI calculator.

To use this information, find your total kWh usage for a billing cycle and divide by the number of days in that cycle. This gives you your average daily kWh consumption. Multiply that by 1000 to get the Watt-hours (Wh) per day, which you can plug into our Battery Bank Sizer or Solar Panels Needed calculator.

Optimization Tips for Maximum Efficiency

Getting the most out of your solar investment involves more than just buying panels. Proper planning, installation, and maintenance are key to maximizing your system's energy production and lifespan.

Optimal Orientation & Tilt

Ensure panels face the equator (South in Northern Hemisphere, North in Southern) at an angle close to your latitude. Use our Tilt Optimizer.

Minimize Shading

Even small amounts of shade on a panel can significantly reduce the output of the entire string. Conduct a thorough shade analysis of your site.

Ensure Proper Ventilation

High temperatures reduce panel efficiency. Allow for adequate airflow underneath your panels to keep them cool.

Regular Cleaning

Keep panels free of dust, dirt, leaves, and snow. A clean panel can produce up to 25% more energy than a dirty one.

Use Correct Wire Sizing

Undersized wires lead to voltage drop and power loss. Use our Cable Gauge Calculator to select the right size.

Choose MPPT Controllers

For most systems, an MPPT charge controller is up to 30% more efficient at converting panel power to battery power than a PWM controller.
